DC Water is currently evaluating the implementation of Leak Detection capabilities to help improve overall water service reliability. Breaks in the city’s water main system can be extremely disruptive to both customers and others who are impacted by water service interruptions and can also cause street closures further expanding the impact. DC Water is in the process of evaluating the Aclara STAR ZoneScan solution which would integrate with the already existing Aclara Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution to address its leak detection requirements. Using advanced acoustic monitoring technology, STAR ZoneScan pinpoints leaks in water mains and services allowing utilities to locate and make repairs before they become major problems. Deployed at regular intervals throughout the water pipeline network, acoustic loggers which are attached to valves via the integrated magnetic base will monitor and analyze noise characteristics within the pipe network to detect the location of a leak. The ZoneScan system automates the collection, retrieval, and analysis of acoustic data by taking advantage of the latest features of Aclara’s STAR Network AMI system, providing critical water distribution system data and analytics to the central office. This remote monitoring improves the efficiency of water management by reducing truck rolls and provides near real-time information for quicker response. The addition of STAR ZoneScan leak detection to a STAR Network AMI system also gives water utilities a powerful tool to quantify and reduce system water losses, contributing to water balance calculations by allowing comparison of total water consumption to water production.
